There were monsters down there, who would've followed us back to the surface. The only way to stop them was to collapse the entirety of the underground tunnels. Of course, doing so would kill the people living there, so we tried to persuade them to evacuate with us.
Those ten we brought are the only ones who took the risk and agreed, despite their society's utter fear of the surface. Even knowing what was coming—and that they couldn't avoid the monsters forever—the others decided that they would rather die underground than dare to leave.
... It is what it is. Everyone—us, the children, and those who stayed behind—made the decisions they could best live with, out of the options provided.
